Environmental & Sustainability Statement
Last Updated: September 19, 2025
At Bingley Stone we are dedicated to sustainable practices and minimising the environmental impact of our natural stone supply business. We recognise the importance of responsible sourcing, waste reduction, and resource conservation, and we strive to balance high-quality stone production with environmental stewardship.
Our Commitments
-
-
Responsible Sourcing: We partner with suppliers who prioritise ethical and environmentally conscious quarrying practices, minimising harm to ecosystems and supporting local communities.
-
Resource Efficiency: We utilise 100% of the stone blocks extracted from our quarries. Primary products are cut directly from the block, while offcuts are transformed into secondary products, such as tumbled setts. Smaller offcuts are crushed into aggregate for use in construction or landscaping. Silt from cutting processes is collated for reuse in a circular economy, such as in compost, manufactured paving slabs, or sandbags.
-
Waste Reduction and Recycling:
-
We generate and extract from our processes approximately 50 tonnes of silt recovery annually, expected to increase to 100 tonnes with new machinery. We are actively conducting a Circular Economy audit to explore innovative recycling options for this silt, such as use in compost, manufactured paving slabs, or sandbags.
-
-
Water Conservation:
-
In 2018, we implemented a water recycling project that reduced our water use by 312m³ annually and saved over £10,000 in wastewater disposal costs each year.
-
In 2024 with grant support from the UK Government Business Productivity Fund, we are undertook an additional water recycling project for our new production saws to further reduce water consumption and waste.
-
-
Energy Efficiency: We use energy-efficient equipment and processes where possible to lower our carbon footprint.
-
Local Sourcing: By sourcing stone primarily from UK quarries, we reduce transport-related emissions and support local economies.
-
Sustainable Products: Natural stone is inherently durable, long-lasting, and low-maintenance, reducing the need for frequent replacements and contributing to sustainable construction. It has a low embodied carbon footprint compared to many other building materials, as shown in the table below. Lifecycle assessments show natural stone often outperforms alternatives like ceramics or synthetics in global warming potential.

|
Material |
Embodied Carbon (kg CO2e per tonne) |
|---|---|

-
Recyclability: Natural stone is 100% recyclable and reusable. At the end of its life cycle, it can be repurposed for new projects, crushed into aggregate for roads or construction, or reused as paving, reducing the demand for new materials and minimising waste.

Customer Guidance
-
Natural stone is a low-impact, eco-friendly material that ages naturally with the environment. We encourage customers to embrace its unique variations and longevity as part of its sustainability benefits.
Continuous Improvement
We are committed to regularly reviewing and enhancing our environmental practices. Our ongoing Circular Economy audit and water recycling initiatives reflect our dedication to innovation and sustainability. We welcome feedback from customers and partners to further strengthen our efforts.
